Improvements for a Sunny Pool

Hey TFP,

I’ve been rigorously following TFP advice for a little over a month now with great success, overall. The water is consistently crystal clear and beautiful!

I’m curious if I should raise my CYA… it’s at 40 right now.

I bring my FAC up to 5.5 each night, by the next night, it’s typically back down to 2. My pool is in direct North Texas sun from 1-6 each day, so I know that takes a toll. Is there anything I can do to reduce the amount of chlorine I put in each day (54-64 oz)? Will raising CYA make a difference or is that how having a pool in strong sun in the summer works?

Thanks!

You need more CYA, yes, especially in full sun. You also need to target a higher FC level.
If 5.5 gives you 2 the next day. Then 10 would give you 6.5 the next day.

With a SWCG, I run CYA at 70-80 or the UV and heat eats my FC alive.

With CYA at 40 ppm, you're falling below minimum level each night and inviting algae to come and party. As Reggie suggested, aim for a higher target level when you adjust FC. Likely, you'll only need to add the additional chlorine once to get you to the higher target level. Daily loss should remain the same. Losing 3.5 ppm daily in your area is normal. Increasing CYA to 60 ppm may help decrease daily demand.

Consider a SWG. It will result in lower overall costs and eliminate the daily chore of adding chlorine and luggin' jugs.

I would simply adjust CYA to 60 PPM (just calculate the dosage and add it........test for it a few days later).

That should slow your FC consumption but, as said above, you will need to run your FC a little higher.

If you find little change, you could then go to 80 ppm for CYA but that should be your upper limit for the season.
