I decided to switch to a SWG partly because we are going to be traveling a lot this summer. I used the pool math app to figure how much salt to add. I added 200lbs of salt per the app to reach 3000. After 24hrs and salt completely dissolved I turn on my swg and get high salt code 92. So I ordered the taylor salt drop test kit (I know I should have had that first-but I’m impatient.) I have 4400ppm salt in my pool. I am assuming I must have had some salt in my pool initially. Now, because I didn’t test before adding the salt I am draining at least 25% of my pool today. Then I know my TA and CYA will be off when I refill so I will have to fiddle with that. Not to mention getting the SWG dailed in before my first trip coming up in 2 weeks.!

The reason I am mad is because I know better than to just blindly add anything, including salt, WITHOUT using a proper test kit first.

$$ and time down the drain.

You’re not alone. I had test salt strips and read they’d be +- 400ppm

Well after adding 400 lbs of salt I was at 4200ppm. I should have started with 350 lbs. My drop kit arrived and the test strips (all of them) were off be 1000ppm

I had to drain and fill to get below 4000 ppm for my cell to start working.

Oh and to get ready for the swg I had already added cya and balanced all my other numbers. So of course I had to grab more cya for the pool.

Oh my,

Been there. (throwing chems and filters at my pool hoping it will work itself out)
Someone else’s recycled wisdom: don’t be too hard on yourself. This is education after all. You probably won’t do that again so there’s a small win!
Realizing where you went wrong is all that really matters. Have a mimosa (or a cuppa) and start again while thinking of the fresh, crystal clear poolwater you’ll swim in when you get back. Bon voyage!

Well, it’s all sorted out. My target salt is 2500-3500 for my SWG. My salt is at 3400 which is perfect for the beginning of my rainy season. My CYA is only at 60 so I still need to bump that up in the next few days. But all my other numbers are perfect. My water looks amazing also!

The moral of this story is TEST FIRST BEFORE ADDING SALT. Thanks all for letting me whine.
