  1. What type of pool walls do you have?
  2. How long ago was your pool built?
  3. What did you backfill the pool walls with? (Excavated dirt, fill dirt, gravel, etc)
  4. What pool deck material did you use? (Pavers, concrete, etc)
  5. What did you do to compact soil? (Wait 6 weeks, plate compactor, nothing, etc)
  6. Are you happy with your decisions (Any excessive cracking, depressions, settling)

I'm having my pool installed this month. After reading on TFP is seems like people recommend gravel, but it seems like the plans from imperial pools specify non-expansive soil

The best I can tell, it seems region specific. By me they just backfill with the dig dirt. Everyone used to wait a full season or more before putting in a patio but these days more are installing concrete under pavers. For my 2012 build, 2 of the 3 patio guys i called wouldn't touch it for a year, the 3rd guy said he'd compact the bejesus out of it with RCA and come back if any settled. Which it did the first winter, and he came and fixed for free.

Mine 2022 build was pavers over a concrete slav rebar-ed into the concrete pool walls and will span the gap when any of the over dig settles. (Check towards the end of my build thread in my sig)

Another way is to use footer tubes down to undisturbed earth for the back fill area, basically building a bridge or table that will support itself when the fill settles.
