If I plan on remodeling next season, should I worry about chemical levels while closing this year?

Suffered through a problematic season. My water level fell below the skimmer due to excessively high temps and not a lot of rain. My pool is in desperate need of a makeover (liner, concrete deck, pump timer, etc.), and I decided not to spend $300+ for water when no one was going to go swimming (kids are gone). Long story short, the algae won and with the water level so low, I can't use the vacuum to try and SLAM and clean the water.
My question is since I will probably need to have it drained to replace the liner and do the other necessary work, should I fixate on balancing the water, or should I cut my losses, blow out the lines, cover it and wait for next season?
