We currently have a Hayward 1.5 hp pump and motor for our above ground pool (18 x 52 steel side). It quit last season (after about 8 yrs) so I'm on the hunt for a new pump and motor. My original plan was to replace it with the same (or close as possible) unit but they don't get the best reviews at amazon. Harris and Pentair get better reviews but I haven't heard of them. I've gotten to the point where I don't 100% trust amazon reviews because of the fakes but I don't know where else to find out if these other brands are good or not. Is anyone here familiar with them or have advice on what brand I should get?

Nothing wrong with a Hayward but 1.5hp is way to much pump for that small a pool. How big is your sand filter?
I don't know how big it is but it's supposed to hold 250 lbs of sand. The pump and filter came with the pool. I use an auto vacuum so I need the pump to be strong enough for that. But my question was about the other two brands. The hayward has gotten a lot of negative reviews recently, with people saying their first one lasted a long time but newer ones aren't lasting as long.
Hayward is cheaper made yes. Pentair or Jandy are the Porsche’s but can and do cost more. If you are a DIY’er, replacing bearings and seals is very cheap. Go with a two speed 1.5hp, run the high speed only for vacuuming. The low speed will save you a lot of money.
Thank you-I'll look into the 2 speed. We're hoping that whatever we get has the same footprint because we don't want to drill more holes in the cement pad that it's on. My husband said he thought it was a sealed motor, so the bearings can't be replaced? Or not replaced easily? I know nothing about motors.
I have been satisfied with my Pentair Intelliflo. However, it has some quarks. My LCD screen is blank right now. I found a thread here discussing and what the issues are. I am going to try and fix it. Calling Pentair tech support is a waste of time. I spent an hour or so of my life between 3 calls for absolutely nothing. Every time I had an issue they told me the drive was bad and I needed another $650 drive. So far every issue I have had was not a bad drive, but they insisted that it was. Their philosophy on why the screen is blank was because the drive was on its way out. I told them it had better not be it's just 5 yrs old and that isnt a reasonable duration for that expensive of a pump to need a $650 part replaced. Turns out everyone on the forum with the same issues say it is a loose wire and can fixed for nothing. I am about to find out.

I've only checked a couple of sites but so far, a motor alone costs more than the motor/pump combo. Where is a good place to get just the motor? There are a couple of pool stores within an hour of me and their lowest priced motor is $250 (single speed 1.5 hp).
