Yes, and no. But only due to the % of chlorine.

Bleach is typically 6%, while liquid pool "shock" has a much higher percentage. Check your bottles for the percentage, it's probably somewhere around 10-12%.

Cyanuric Acid and Muriatic Acid are two completely different things.
 
Hey all. Joined earlier today. Ex pat from the UK now living in North Carolina. New to owning a pool (weather not really pool friendly in Scotland lol). We recently bought an above ground pool (Coleman 22ft thing from Walmart). Very quickly decided to buy an Intex Sand Filter Pump to run things instead of the thing the kit comes with.

Learning many fun and exciting things as I go through the process... Already had it up and filled, to then sump pump the water out and properly level it... First family gathering test of it now it`s leveled and back up was done today and much fun was had by all :D

Looking forward to hopefully learning things from the wealth of knowledge that I see on here :D

No tablets unless you are out of town, thats the main purpose of solid forms of chlorine. Solid forms of chlorine add something else to your water like calcium or cyanuric acid, which both accumulate over time and can only be removed by draining water. Liquid chlorine aka. bleach only adds salt and in very small quantities which are irrelevant to pool maintenance.

Okay so once I slammed the pool to get rid of the algae and get the cya up and the ph and alkalinity are good what am I supposed to use to treat the pool on a regular basis?

Liquid Chlorine, aka Bleach for now. Once you get to know your pool needs better you can opt for a Salt Water Generator or a liquid chlorine inyector system aka Stenner Pump. Both of these make additions a little more hands off, but you will still need to test and adjust according to swimmers load/seasons.

So another words I should continue through the summer to use liquid chlorine and keep an eye on my pH and alkalinity am I understanding you correctly?

Yes, bleach/liquid chlorine.

You may need some muriatic acid if your pH tends to creep up, which is fairly typical. Depending on your test results, also perhaps some borax (20 Mule Team) and baking soda. But those last two won't be in your regular maintenance and chances are you won't need them right away or maybe not ever this season.

For the moment however if you want to get ready for your SLAM, just plan on a LOT of bleach and maybe little bit of muriatic acid (if your pool store test result for pH is correct, but we'll see about that when your kit comes).

Congratulations on your new kit! You'll be in business in no time now.

Good luck with your house sale. I just did that, what a pain. House was cleaner than it had ever been but we had to put work into it every time we had a showing. So weird... teenagers/young adults CAN actually clean.
 
If you look at the bottom of this page, the web version of our handy PoolMath program will help you figure out how much liquid chlorine you need.
Just fill in all the information blanks top and bottom with good test results and it will give you tons of help.

I get liquid chlorine from WM in the pool section for now 10%. Check the dates if you can. I've also used Top Job bleach 5% (I'm guessing) because it takes twice as much (only a dollar tho). Again check dates it will be something like 19 174 (yr the day of yr). You want the most recent date.

I ordered stabilizer for cya from WM, it might be in your store. (Hth stabilizer pods)

Muriatic Acid from lowes or home depot (lowers ph) Avoid breathing it and splashing it on anything. I mixed it in a bucket with pool water for a while, now I just pour it in...you'll get there. Mainly now, you need the heavy chlorine, test kit and cya ?

LOL yes it is a pain a huge pain literally. I've been trying for 6 years to get my house ready to sell and I'm really cracking the whip here. Unfortunately I don't have help to get this done so it's very difficult for me. the market is better than ever right now and I am determined that I have to get this done this summer and this is a horrible time for the pool to go green on me.
Thank you so much for your detailed and simple to understand instructions. I finally understand now. Not to sound whining but I have a few disorders that make my ability to focus and prioritize and comprehend very difficult so I so appreciate you simplifying it for me. You're the best and I should have my test kit in a couple days here.

, LOL so here's my naiveness coming through. I am under the impression that cya is cyanuric acid.
Thank you so much for your simple explanation I think I'm beginning to understand things now. My test kit should be here in a couple days but meanwhile I will dump some Shock in there and get that going. I have to be away today so I probably won't get to do it today. Big hill to climb SO waiting for my neighbor to carry it to the backyard for me. I'm a little wimpy LOL. You guys are just amazing I can't believe this help that I've been given by so many people that truly care and responses are amazingly fast. I've never experienced anything such as this and I'm so grateful to have found you guys. I actually do feel like I'm part of the family.

Thank you Maddie. I am waiting for my test kit to arrive and for now I will just start dumping liquid shock or chlorine in the pool to get the process going. I will check out the math calculator and it sounds like it should be simple to do. I have never such great advice and the pool stores like to lead you in the wrong direction just so they can sell you chemicals. they often get you in a panic and I have spent so much unnecessary money. I guess they saw me coming LOL but thank you so much for all of your help I will be in touch.
