Hydrostatic Valve Leak?

Hi All;

Opened pool a couple months ago to add chlorine and noticed the water level was below steps, skimmer and return. We only lower pool a few inches below skimmer when closing in the Fall so lost quite a bit of water over the Winter, more than past years. Pool person said that it could be the hydrostatic valve. If so,they can replace easily. My question: Is there some way to cover the drain to prevent water loss over the summer and just wait until Fall. The drain is not in use as it is an equalizer. To my knowledge, the water table in my area is not particularly high.

Many thanks,
Gary R.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the advantage of waiting till fall to repair it compared to repairing it as soon as the repair guy has the time?
In my opinion, it would be beneficial to have chlorinated water flowing through and not letting it stagnate over the summer. But you know what they say about opinions.....
