My name is Doug and I purchased a home with an in-ground pool and spa about 2.5 years ago. I had the local pool shop come and explain to me how my system works. It was a good explanation but it was a $95 visit just for talking. My pool is a Roman style 40' x 22' with an attached round spa (spillover tile). The deep end is 9' and the shallow end is 3'. Estimated on original build contract (1993) as 40,000 gallons. The original plaster was deteriorating badly and so we are near the end of having a pebble coating applied - it is filling as I type!

So while I'm "in the pool mood" I'm looking at installing a Variable Speed pump and tidying up my plumbing. I'm pretty unhappy about the layout of my pool equipment and it is still functioning on two separate single-speed pumps. The existing plumbing layout is so tight that my calves are snug when removing the cartridges from my Sta-Rite System3 filter. I discovered this site after my research queries kept offering links to this site. So I'm primarily looking for wisdom on my equipment plumbing and layout. I'm a bit baffled as my low speed motor has a suction and return line (totally separate from high speed pump & plumbing) but doesn't feed into my filter. I'm not sure where the suction comes from or the return goes. So I'll be posting my questions in the plumbing sub-forum. My equipment pad has no shade and is also right out in the blazing sun. So I'm also looking for some ideas to enclose the area with some roof covering.

I'm interested in building a Smart-Home become I love gadgets & technology. I also receive calls from my family members every single time they want to use the spa and they can't remember how to manually set the valves. So I want to make this a Smart Phone affair - press the button labeled "Spa Start". My equipment is all original except the Hayward Spa Heater (natural gas) that was replaced about 3 years ago. So I'm trying to get my head around the control units and motorized valves. My intent is to complete this work myself rather than paying a contractor. Although I'm no expert, I am handy.

Off topic interests include SBC's (No, not Small Block Chevy but rather Small British Cars)(MGB's - 2 of them), music, technology, family and Jesus. Glad to be here.

DB,

Welcome to TFP... A great resource for all MG loving pool owners... :drown:

Looks like a pretty nice set up to me...

About the only advice I can give you on pool automation is that it is about 20 years out of date with today's technology.

Your best bet is to make sure that the automation system, any Variable speed pumps and any Saltwater cells can all "talk" with each other.

The best way to do that is to use the same brand of equipment... all Pentair or all Hayward or all brand XXXX...

Glad you found us and looking forward to your questions in the appropriate forum...

Thanks for posting your intro and a great pic,

Jim R.
