How to Seat Inlet, Outlet O-Rings on Pentair Clean and Clear C-160318?

I installed a Pentair Clean and Clear C-160318 filter. I may have had too much faith in the unions on the inlet and outlet. I figured the engineers had worked it out so it was simple to close them. Instead of sealing them up and then attaching pipes to them with glue, I attached the pipes first and planned to seal them later.

The O-rings don't seem to want to seat anywhere. I thought they might seat themselves when I tightened the collars, but they do not.

Is there a trick to seating these things, or should I just cut the pipes, seal them up with the filter on its side in the yard, and then use cemented couplers to put the pipes back together?

The solution was simple. Remove the filter from the system entirely, turn it on its side, seat an O-ring, turn it over, and seat the other O-ring. Then reinstall the filter. It turns out the rings will stay in place without grease.
The O-rings should still be lubed with silicone pool lube regardless if they stay in place or not.
