In the process of resurfacing the pool deck, and xylenes was used to remove the oil base sealant. Unfortunately, even with diking around the pool some waste ended up in the pool. Any idea the best way to remove it? If I had to guess it is less than 10ppm containment. Pool is ~15k gallons. Utilizing DE filer Media. Salt water with a chlorinator. Since I am due up, my first step was to do a full filter housing cleaning.

Ouch.

Here’s some info I found-

When released to soil or water, xylenes will quickly evaporate. They may leach into ground water and persist there for several years. There is little potential for accumulation in aquatic life.

Xylene can be absorbed by the skin. Since xylene easily releases from water into the air, bathing and showering with xylene-contaminated water may increase exposure through inhalation. Bathing, swimming and showering with water containing xylene above 10 ppm is not advised.

The following treatment methods have been approved by EPA for removing xylenes: Granular activated charcoal.

Now the downside to activated charcoal is that it also removes chlorine. But perhaps a combination of partial drain/fill, UV from the sun, possibly active charcoal in a skimmer sock, and time??

Calling @JoyfulNoise for thoughts.

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Xylenes are highly volatile and so aerating the water will lower any concentration to very small levels. Chlorine and UV will destroy the rest. A partial drain and refill wouldn’t hurt anything except your wallet.
