It usually doesn't stay below freezing long around here. Pool is large and oddly shaped, so I have no cover. I also have a raised tanning ledge that spills into the main pool. It's about 8 inches deep.

I've got 2 pumps, one for the ledge spillover and the main. Also have the filter, the heater, and the SWG. The heater is electric and is super expensive to run, and very inefficient.

I can't refill easily due to being on a slow well for water, so I'd definitely prefer not to drain any if I can. My preference would be to keep it running. What do I need to know? Thanks.

Keep the water moving. That's key. As long as water is moving through the pipes and components, it won't freeze on the cold nights. But be ready if power loss is expected. Have a Plan B and know how to expedite removing drain plugs so that water can drain out of equipment quickly should you lose power. That should prevent freeze expansions in those parts and pipes. You might also consider having materials available to wrap exposed pipes and components if power goes out as part of your Plan B.

Thanks for the reply. What about the tanning ledge and the spill over? I'm guessing just keep that running with the pump over night and should be fine, I assume?

Correct. Now some pools do get a little tricky based on features. Those with water features, waterfalls, or areas that might have residual puddling might present a freeze issue. But for a standard ledge and spillover you should be okay.

Thanks again. One more question.

Would it help to get a cover to put over the main pool like this one during the winter?
