CYA is zero at opening and water is dark green. The pool math calculator says that I need to add 4.5 pounds of stabilizer to our pool to get to 30 ppms. I’ve read on here that you should never put stabilizer in a sock in the skimmer when you are doing a SLAM with a sand filter because you will lose stabilizer when backwashing. I’d like to try the “sock of stabilizer in front of a return” method for the first time instead and have a few questions:
1. What type of sock works the best and dissolves the CYA the fastest? (Men’s knee-high tube sock, men’s dress sock, women’s knee high panty hose?)
2. How many pounds of stabilizer do you put in a sock at one time if you need to dissolve 5 lbs quickly so you can start a SLAM?
3. How quickly can you get CYA to dissolve and get into the water if you go outside to squeeze it? How long do you wait after putting it into the water before you start squeezing it? Will it dissolve faster when squeezing it if you only put 1 lb or less in a sock at one time?
4. How do you attach the sock to the string so it won’t accidentally come off, and attach the string to the deck so high winds doesn’t knock it into the pool? High winds/thunderstorms are expected during the next 2 days when I need to add the stabilizer. I do not have any patio furniture, a ladder, or anything behind the return to attach it to. If I attached it to a pool pole, I don’t know how I would anchor it so it wouldn’t budge during a thunderstorm with high winds like is forecasted tomorrow and Tuesday.
5. Can I put a sock of stabilizer in front a shallow end return or just in front of a deep end return? We only have one skimmer and its in the deep end, on the opposite side of the deep end return.
