Looking to upgrade my tiny intex 1000gph pump/sand filter to this used doughboy de pump/filter. Pool is intex 18x48 chlorine with all intex hoses, valves, intakes, return etc. How do i go from a “traditional” pump filter to the intex pool from a hose and connector standpoint?

I would hard plumb that or use flexible pc for your hoses and connectors. (As a matter of fact, I have a new 1.5 hp pump and sand filter waiting in the garage to replace the 3/4 hp pump I have now, which replaced the dinky Bestway cartridge filter pump that came with the pool! I replaced it after about 2 weeks and a cost analysis on the cost of cartridges.)

I haven't seen any 1 1/2 or 2 inch hoses that will replace the 1 1/4 hoses Intex supplies, hence the pipe or flex; I'm going the flex route myself. Plus you're going to have to cut bigger openings in the pool to accommodate the larger fittings you're going to need on the outlet and inlets. You're going to want to put in a skimmer, replacing one of the inlets.

You'll need gate valves (ball valves wear out quicker), unions, and tees. Primer and glue. Emery cloth. And paint to protect your plumbing masterpiece from UV rays.

This is just off the top of my head -- I haven't even done mine yet but I've been thinking about it for a year! Hopefully others will chime in with better, more detailed info.

Yes, there are converters like this
That's what I have on my pump right now.

I highly recommend putting a through wall skimmer on. You'll soon get disgusted with an Intex over the wall skimmer.
I prefer Hayward, but Amazon seems to be out of those...

Im trying to find an upgraded sand filter pump setup for my pool. Is there a industry standard on how to test and rate gph or is it like auto hp where they all do it a little different to get favorable numbers?

found a small dia sand filter with less hp but bigger gph rating than larger dia sand filter and larger hp motor?? The doheny is 2100 gph and the swimline is 2400 gph.

More like changing the gear ratio (impeller) so the results are different.

With your recent adventure you saw firsthand the benefits of more filtering. I don’t think the flow would ever be an big issue in a smaller pool, but the filtering would certainly come in handy day to day with less frequent cleanings.

So would more sand (larger dia filter) mean more filtering? I want to be able to run one of the auto suction vacuums that you hook up, toss it in and it does its own thing, thats why im looking at gph.

Well yes and no. It’s the same filtering but longer before the pressure rises and you have to backwash/clean it. Very handy in pollen season and the early fall with all kinds of crud dropping.

How does motor HP play into all of this?
I’m guessing that the smaller pump has a bigger impeller allowing it to move more water. Many pumps have a couple of replacement impellers and it’s possible you could get a bigger one for the 3/4 hp pump to accomplish the same thing. If not then you might want the more flow from the smaller pump for the vacuum instead of the larger filter.

Was there specific requirements for the vac or are you just going on the principal that more flow is better suction ?

mostly principal but seems a lot say min 3/4 hp or min 2,000ish gph. Thanks for the impeller info, ill check👍

are you getting this pump and filter? Do they say what size it is? A DE is great at filtering small but I know nothing of them as I have a cartridge filter.. Any filter the bigger the better and there are great deals out there.. My friend and I just drove down to Texas to get a 42- sq ft cart filter of facebook for 75 bucks.. the bigger the filter the better..

Pumps: You really want a 2 speed or VS, if you can only get a 1 speed get a 3/4 to 1 hp max, anything above that will eat electricity...

Once you get a pump and filter setup I can show you what to get to connect to the pool :)

I had no idea HD had pool pumps and lots of 2 speed pump for a great price... Check this 1hp out 2 speed

Home Depot sells Hayward skimmers on their website for around $65. It also comes with vacuum adapter, return jet, and two male thread to hose adapters (1.5in)
