How much acid do you have to add?

None since finding my pool's TA sweet spot (79-80) and adding borates (50-60) some years ago. Since then pH stays at 7.5 all season even with the SWCG. :)

Is there a reason you are using dry acid? Is muriatic acid not available?

8.0/90

I don't really mind the acid usage. I only posted to show the OP that his was far from excessive.

My bigger issue is the buildup of chloride from so much acid mainly because my acid pump stops dosing when the salinity reaches 4200ppm

Impressive. Something doesn't sit right with me though. Are you running you spa jets a lot?

My water is very similar to yours and yet my pH is very stable....

I have an automated valve on my airline that stays closed. Even when the spa is used, I don't open it because I don't really care for the jets anyway. The spillway runs for 40 mins a day (12" high, no jets, 1800 rpm) and I've had 50 ppm of borates from the time the startup period was over.

Plaster is over a year old now so that can't be the cause even though I don't believe in the pH rise from plaster curing much beyond 1-3 months.

It actually seems like the TA rises faster than the pH does. Short of the fill water, I don't know of any upward pressure on the TA.

Is there a reason you are targeting PH of 7.4? Ideal PH is generally 7.6 to 7.8. Your PH might be stable in that range.

You should be using almost no acid. SWGs should be ph neutral.

Keep the ph at 7.8, the CYA at 60 to 70 and don't raise the TA.

Yes there is a reason.... Well, I said 7.4 ( which I haven't achieved) but I was remembering .1 off from the "Water balance for SWG" page here on TFP

Adjust your pH to 7.5-7.6 and not any lower. Monitor your pH and when it climbs to 7.8 add acid to lower it back to 7.5-7.6 (This is also IMPORTANT!)

Do you see something odd here?- that you're running your SWG that long at 100% and your FC is only 5??

As I mentioned a few posts ago, your test results don't go any higher, right? SO you really don't know how high your FC is and you're running the SWG much more than necessary. Which may be contributing to your labile pH.

No not really.... While my test only goes to 5.... on the scale.... the liquid will go MUCH darker than the shade that = 5. But when I test it, it is right on. I am hitting 5 in the AM ( when pump had just shut off) and closer to 3 in the evening. also, the run time isn't really that long. I go 9 hrs at 100%. If I ran the pump all day that would be equivalent to about 40% run time on the SWG.

Nonetheless, I will dilute a sample and double check to be sure my chlorine isn't way higher than 5.

Ahaa! It is OK to let your PH stay 7.6 to 7.8. Just be sure to keep it 7.8 or lower. See if it will hang out at 7.7-7.8.

OK, yea I thought that 7.5 is where it needed to stay...

This AM the readings were

Chlorine - 5
PH - 7.9 ( had to go buy acid which I will add tonight)
Salt 3400 (according to cell sensor)
CA- 60
TA - 70

Ill have to just keep watching it.... I am tempted to get the intellichem and have it add the acid for me... another grand at this point would be well worth it for me not to have to add acid every few days... But Ill see how it all settles in before I do that... perhaps I can find a happy point where the PH hangs out.
