Adding a Hayward skimmer to my intext AGP hopefully this weekend. Question: should I run a 2" hose directly from it to my pump, or keep the branch and a second intake but use 1.25" hoses? I understand there's a safety issue with only one intake but also the reduced bore concerns me for practical reasons.

So long as the only intake is the skimmer you’re good. Many people do away with the other one or make it a return. My 33’ above ground pool has 1.5” hoses/pipes & it’s fine.
The Hayward above ground skimmers I have seen are usually able to accommodate 1 1/4” & 1 1/2” - not 2”
- will u be using an intex pump? If so there are adapters for 1.5” standard threads to intex proprietary threads

If u wish to use standard 1 1/2” above ground hoses like this👇with hose clamps

Then u can get these to connect them to your intex equipment 👇

On my pool I have a Hayward skimmer with a 1.5 inch hose running to a 1.5 inch PVC pipe along the ground to a ball valve then a union where two 1.25 inch hoses go into a T fitting, through another ball valve (so I can turn off everything or just the skimmer) and then to the 1.5HP pump. 2 inch line to the filter and 1.5 inch line back to the pool. I have no issues with suction power or keeping prime.

You should be good as the second intake allows water under the surface to be sucked in as well.
