Pool is consuming alot of FC per day here in Australia and it is winter. I just wondered how much FC I should be losing with solar blanket on?

Re: Stuck with Slamming Process

In Australia, you are in winter. With a cover, you might only be losing 1 ppm a week. Unless you have alot of organics that get blown in the pool.

Ok thanks. Finding it hard to work out what I am actually losing during the day as I’m running a swg. So it should be running on a very low setting? The cover is off between 1 and 6 hours a day. Also I’m not sure if the heat pump affects FC usage. Yes, we are in winter, but we are in Brisbane and having 24 ish degree days in full sun with no rain or cloud at the moment. Not much in the way of organics unless my little cherubs are using the pool as a toilet! They have been swimming on average about 1.5 hours a day. Currently have the swg generating a FC of about 4.8 a day and its stable (I do want to bump the FC higher as this is at the low end of the range for my CYA).

Thanks Marty.

Finding it hard to work out how much I should be loosing each day. The company that installed the heat pump and cover said that the cover would cut down on chlorine loss and the heat pump would add to it which should equate to a normal fc loss without cover. I’m not sure how true this is as I don’t really believe much of what anyone is telling me anymore other than here.

As per above pool has about 1.5 hours of use a day currently and is in full sun. Outside temps are around 24*C and pool temp is 30*C.

Plan to run a OCLT tonight but first want to know if I need to leave cover off and switch off heat pump during? The swg will be off.

Any insight would be appreciated.

You do not need to leave the cover off for the OCLT. Neither the heat pump. You should run the pump.
Temperature has little effect on chlorine loss. Sun angle and thus UV plus organics (swimmers) create FC load.

Good luck.

Then between UV and organics during the day you are consuming the FC you are generating.

I assume you are not using the pH and ORP probes that the manual says this unit can support?

My unit isn’t equiped with an ORP probe. It has a ph probe but I believe that the unit doesn’t auto dose as it should. I am manually dosing acid either through the chlorinator (adjusting for dilution) or by hand. I dont let it creep past 7.9 at the very highest and push it back to 7.6. I have had the unit looked at already but will be paying for an Astral tech to come and look at it again once our pb has finished up. Could this affect FC usage?

pH does not effect FC levels.

Pump run is up to the owner. Depends on what keeps your pool clean really. Of course, you have to run it for chlorine but that can be anytime as long as the FC stays at or above target.

Check to see how your unit handles the on/off cycle for your % setting. Some manufactures use 2 or 3 hour cycles. Some, like Pentair, use 5 minute cycles.

Not sure it matters, but with short run times it might be impacted by how the unit operates.

Thank you. I can set my run times for how many hours and minutes at a time I like. Handover guy said that since my swg cell is set to flip to reverse I need my run times to be equal.

Something interesting that I have noticed this morning after running my pump on low all night (with swg 0%) is that my ph hasn’t budged. Usually morning is when I notice that it’s crept up to 7.9. Possibly the auto acid dosing needs more run time to do its thing. I might play around with increasing my run times and lower my swg % to compensate.
