I am so glad to have come across this page. Our pool had very high CYA (500) according to the InstaTest Pro600 that our soon to be former pool company uses. I'd venture to say the pool is 11000 gallons, in ground, plaster. I am reading through the pool school and ABCs as quickly as possible. The first time I drained it, I drained about 14". The second time, about 6". The CYA is now down to 150, based on the strips. I did order a recommended test kit, but while I wait for that, I want to know how to maintain the proper chlorine level to match the CYA level, as now the yellow spots are darker and there are more of them than ever before. The free chlorine on the strip today with the CYA of 150 was down to 3. How do I maintain the free chlorine (adding liquid) throughout the draining process? We should be getting some rain this next week, thanks to Beryl (I'm in Houston), so that will more than likely complicate the situation. Once I get past this hurdle, I'm looking forward to taking care of the pool maintenance myself.
