Hi I am Heather. Need advice please for my metal frame pool liner

I have the strangest rips in the bottom of my new bestway steel pro 12x36 that I just put up June 1 and noticed water loss by June 23 and then investigated further to find these rips of strange shape all same size also.

I did everythig right or so I thought. It's not my first pool in the spot. I sprayed round up then dug out my higher ground and leveled it out. Also compacted with tamper tool. Laid anti weed fabric and then a new heavy duty tarp prior to setting up. I have no help and I'm a single mom who's disabled with a special needs child and he needs this for water therapy. Put pool together then modified it so I could use 1500 gph pump and large pool fittings along with plunger valves and screw on hoses. I test my water daily with a 6 way kit plus 6 way strips. My ph was running high and I did use ph down by chlorox pools and spas. I don't know if this ate my liner or maybe this is due to it being manufactured 1/30/2014?

So i began using jb weld water weld to plug the spots but seemed like more I plugged the more rips I found. I've been waiting over a month on my warranty claim due to problems uploading photos and then I was told my pool was discontinued so no replacement liner available. I would get 12x30 steel pro max like the intex ultra frame pools. Well I had just given away a 10x30 when I found this 12x36 so I wasn't happy. Then they sent me the regular steel pro and I demanded I get a return label and the max I was promised so they asked me to send photos proving I received wrong pool so I did. Then Rec call stating they had a 12x36 liner to send. It's supp to arrive wed.

Ive drained the pool and then went to pump rest of water out but my submersible pump quit on me so ordered new one. Got it in finally so I pumped last night.

I dont see anything between the tarp and pool at all. I have a lot of nut grass so that was a concern despite the anti weed material. To be on the safe side regardless of what I do patch or use new liner, I ordered a gorilla pad and I am going to add more sand to the area and compact it over a couple days using tamper tool and sprinkler.

Any suggestions as to what the cause of this is? Dry rot liner due to age? The ph down treatment? Or the actual high ph level I was running which was the highest on the tests little over 8. If I can add photos I will try cause the rips look like crescent moon almost like a fingernail! It's also possible this was intentional damage from recent domestic violence or my evil next door neighbor.

Basicaly i would like to know the possible causes being such a short time less than a month and having over half dozen rips only in the floor of the pool liner. Would it be wise to patch both sides once it dries so I can save new liner coming wed for next season? If so what is recommended? I have pool liner material for patches and vinyl cement also flex tape and flex spray in clear and other options too. But if this is hopeless I don't want to waste my time. Obviously it wasn't losing as much water as I thought cause it's sat with couple inches of water for over a week. Makes no sense. Also I clean the pool with a pool blaster max li rechargeable vac so it really gets the job done. Also use brush regularly and hand skim with the skimmer sock over it. Never had any problems with algae or metals that I know of.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Heather and welcome to the forum. Well, your situation stinks to say the least. Sounds like you've had a rough time at it. It's not uncommon for vinyl pools to get a leak, maybe a small puncture hole or small tear here or there. In scenarios where nutgrass, rocks, sticks, etc tear the liner on the floor below, you would expect a hole or small tear perhaps, then maybe even feel the item poking through. But to have several tears in the bottom sounds suspicious to me. I lived in the area while stationed at Barksdale for a couple years, so I know there are critters everywhere with claws, but I can't imagine one getting to the bottom. I sure hope it's not from someone's intentional actions. You might want to consider an simple surveillance camera if so. Pool stores and online supply centers sell a variety of vinyl repair kits, but those have their limitations depending on the amount of tears and location. I doubt the chemical balance really had much to do with your situation. Sometimes a liner can become a bit brittle if not managed properly, and age can begin to take its toll, but that's about it.

The only other thing I would add is to try your best to obtain a better test kit. The HTH 6-way is okay for short-term use, but strips are horrible. We always recommend either a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C (link below in my sig). You can't go wrong with either of those. Hope things get better for you. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you so much! I am close to barksdale on e Texas actually almost to la downs. I finally got my replacement liner from bestway for warranty. They really did good It was just tech prob on my end w the photos over n over. But they didn't ask me to ship anything only pics of damage. But this liner exact same batch! Also made 1/30/2014! They fold them so tight and it may b a prob. Esp due to the hard rubber parts coming out of wall for 2 suction and 1 inlet plus one hard plastic drain valve cover and the fold lines haven't gone away on the one I got first.

Ok I got it empty and yes it has to b intentional! I saw only 1 tiny sprout of nut grass that managed to get between sheets of anti weed fabric and came thru the new tarp but it didn't puncture the pool. There are some pointy areas from small rocks making the way to the top. So this looks like was from Inside for sure being we used the pool maybe 5 hour max.

the jb water weld works great but I did get some of the rubberized tape 2 rolls and I hav the spray n clear too but also tons of actual cut pool liner for patching and also vinyl patch kits as well lol.

So what u think? Maybe patch it up and I did get more cameras. But I usually keep cover on unless we swim and I haven't on this one as much as I should but nice to know it wasn't chemical.

I have sand and hand tool to compact and got the hand tool to kind of till it up some but may as dad to bring his real tiller. And my garilla pad came in so I just don't know should I try and salvage? Save new liner for next season? Guess all I'm risking is extra $ on my water bill and some extra time.

One big question tho do u think a liner sitting n warehouse packed so tight folded tight for years would make it fail? I've already spent so much time to modify the damaged liner for the intex pump and fittings. I wasn't about to even touch 330 gph pump that came with this pool! And since u know my area u know we can even swim in December sometimes cause u never know what the weather will do here. But my son started school today so things will b easier for me to accomplish but he prob won't b able to enjoy it except weekends. Thanks again I appreciate any input.
Heather.

Also I hav the hth strips lol and the liquid 6 way is kikodo I think is the name from academy. Wouldn't believe the deals I got there! Intex vinyl repair kit 1.99! The 6 way testing 9.99. Foot bath connect to ladder 4.99! Intex ground mat 15.99 even lectra vac battery operated clearance 9.98 free shipping w telescoping pole! And they sell intex screw on pump hose for cheaper than intex! 7.99. Crazy didn't know they even sold pool supplies. 30' vac hose 1.5" 16.99 these r regular price except lectravac just FYI. And last season I used chlorox pool n spa liquid test but I gave it and my old pool and extra pump and supplies to someone who lost theirs in a grass fire so their kids could have something replaced. So I wanted to try these but I will look for the ones u mentioned. I'm still looking at pool school etc just to b sure I'm doing it all correct cause u learn new things everyday. Also wondering bout styrofoam like egg crate for mattress type material under pool for pad read somewhere it's perfect n lasts forever but I'm def getting anti nut grass treatment cause weed n feed isn't working. For rest of my yard I mean. The ground had been clear there for pool over a year but my yard guy kept using a blower and i would find loose grass Around pool so I sent pic showing no him big reason why he can't do it. Can blow seeds! Maybe was animal tho hav raccoons n yard and bunnies. Raccoons still get n trash even w bungee cord and drill hole to put on lid and pull it down tight n attach to bar the truck latches onto. It's crazy and I'm supp to live in city limits! It is pepper point mobile home community u may remember it. Bpcc is across st from it now used to b on airline tho

I forgot to mention none of the holes or rips are in the seam area of the liner and like I said today I don't see evidence when I finally got it empty enough to check between pool and tarp of why it would have any prob. Even the one little sprout had 2 tiers popped up thru tarp of nut grass wasnt in area where leaks were and I really wonder tho if these go all way thru cause after draining it sat with 2" or more water in it for almost 2 week and cause my Atwood battery operated submersible pump wouldn't work. Think wire got pulled from battery assembly little too far so bad to wait on shipment of electric submersible to come but I'm def prepared to go over the ground with better anti weed fabric 10yr warranty after using the advanced long acting round up and nut grass killer and add sand and water and compress repeat twice n make sure level.

should my new gorilla pad go on top of the heavy duty tarp or under it? I also hav intex ground mat 15' I may use too and a new 12' intex cover just to be sure all under the pool.

Main question is would u try n clean n patch liner or go with replacment I just got but was also made 1/30/2014? I have no doubts n my pool patching skills. And the products I have here to use. I just don't know if I caused damage by it having only few inches water for almost 2 weeks. I didn't realize my post earlier wouldn't show as reply to you so It's why I'm reposting. These bestway liners r definitely way heavier than my previous ones. Liner itself 12x36 weighs over 30lb. And I know summer waves was no way prob for me to carry entire pool set box from my car into my house. I have fractured spine from late 90's and lumbar discs are all shot. l4-5 is ruptured so I can tell the weight difference very easy. But summer waves tells u the thickness of walls and bottom and bottom is thicker but this bestway I really don't think it is. Walls r 3 ply w mesh something n center.

I wanna begin asap so please let me know ur opinion on salvage old liner n save replacement for next season or not good idea thanks again so much. Not sure yet how to post real reply only quick reply but also add photos cause I could show u how they look.

Just getting back and caught up. :) If you think you can salvage the old liner for a few months, I would give that a shot for now. If nothing else, just to make sure if anything suspicious should happen again, it's not to your new liner. That is IF you can seal the old liner tears well enough to get you through oh, ….. Nov/Dec I suppose? Then "hopefully" whatever caused the tears will be old news and you can install the new replacement liner next season. As for the reliability of that liner that was folded and in storage, I really couldn't say. As long as it wasn't subjected to extreme temperature conditions or left in the sun I would be optimistic. It's good you got one anyways. As for the chemicals, I would encourage you to take a few minutes each day just to get familiar with those links below in my signature. Those will keep your water clear and when the water is tested properly, will save you some $$$ as well. One of the recommended test kits is a one-time investment of about $70 or so, but over the season it pays for itself in accuracy and the money you save from trips to the pool store, getting suckered into buying their ridiculously priced products, and lack of results in the water. Home water testing is one of those things we can all do on our own (properly) without a laptop or Masters Degree. The Gorilla pad is a good choice. Very popular here as well. If you do some searches here at TFP for Gorilla Pad or above ground base prep, you'll see tons of great discussions, advice, and my favorite …. pictures. :)

Finally pics! These I took after draining or most water out. They are zoomed in a lot tho edited after the fact and 3rd is up on top rail. Last is not zoomed u can see one spot I plug with jb waterweld the white playdo looking spot. And all the lines are fold lines from how tight they fold this liner for packaging but also being folded since 1/30/2014! And if u zoom n on that last pic u will see what comes up out of rips when I vac or press. Food coloring test showed me absolutely nothing. So with pics maybe u can tell me if u hold try n patch I am pretty sure I only hav 2 spots not done on inside but I would reinforce under the bottom side with the rubberized tape most likely by flex seal if u think it works never used tape only spray which I hav that n clear but I can use the liner pieces I have and use jb weld epoxy resin which will never come off or vinyl cement just dont wanna make bottom feel hard if I try n salvage gonna hav to take it in front on parking pad concrete so I can spread it out good n look over it really good better clean my plastic wheel barrow out and use it so I don't drag it or mess it up. Also forgot I do hav tiki torches 3 tall ones but I stopped using after couple times due to smut turning pool water yucky color in pump. Was fine n pool. I've never had algae issues or anything. Always clear blue water even after sitting all off season w my last pool it was fine.
So I also hav photos I took to send to manufacturers when pool was full those r harder to see these better. So please would u attempt to salvage? Or u think it's rotted? Again purchase 4/1 reminder opened up once to get printed info re folded wrapped sealed kept inside house and then didn't set up til June 1 and used maybe 2-3 times prior to rips. My ex bonded out of jail for domestic abuse battery and home invasion at my house 2 days prior to me Finding this damage! 63,500.00 bond! So he prob did this but I don't know what would make that shape. Has ANYONE EVER SEEN A SHAPE like this repeatedly in bottom of pool after just setting up? Thank u everyone

I did what I was supp to by adding only 2" water and smoothing out wrinkles whenever I set it up. It didn't look like this. Ugh I better go finish unhooking my pump and fittings and see if I can get this looked at better but everyday say rain no rain bet soon as I begin I will get rain! Lol. Yeah since It held couple inches after I use drain valve I'm thinking it's not bad as I thought but nobody was n it or messing w it so no pressure on rips to let the water out either. Gonna do good look inside and underside have good mag glass app but also USB microscope. Not too late to start cleaning wheel barrow and things I will need and all my adhesive cures fast but I will need to store liner while I add sand and do all the prep I've watched lots of video just don't know if best put pad under heavy duty tarp like intex ground mat then pad then tarp then pool? Or should it go directly under pool? Will get dirty when my kid goes nuts it lets water under pool n tarp seem to hold it in so that may also b what I thought was a lot of leaking water and maybe most was evaporation. Have to see if the holes even go all way thru. May not. Thanks again. So pad under pool or underneath tarp?

So far I've used 5.00 or less chlorine cause bought end of season lol and I use the oxy shock it's hard to measure weight for only 2000 gallons and algaecide just preventative and clarifier after but water always seems fine when I left covered I knew how many tabs of chlorine and when but I keep a Log now and keep up with everythig I do and the levels. The kokodo liquid test seems good has ph and then total alk and then u add another acid fast agent on ph to c how off it is just as a backup to b sure and I use strips too just to c if it's diff cause it has calcium harness and cya too but u said hth stips not good so I will prob not get another set til next season but what u recommend ha great here is the rain just as I predicted! NIce now hav to pump water again ugh thanks so much sorry I'm typing novels u hav been so helPful and I should hav added rips or leak in main caption of thread

I'm thinking the tarp first on the ground then the Gorilla Pad over that. But as for that odd shape in the bottom of the liner … hum... it almost looks like the end of a pole. Hard to tell for sure. I hope your repair works holds you over for a while.

I appreciate all the info. I've been sick and haven't done much so now I'm on debate of take down or still patch but there is pink dots all in bottom of liner. Assuming pink Algae? So I've bought a big tote on wheels so I can use it to put liner in once I take down n try n clean and patch and then work on ground. Hate to take all down leaves big bald area.

Im convinced it is damage from my ex based on when I noticed water loss and rips being June 23 and he bonded out of jail June 20 at night. But I also found some weed killer specific for nutsedge I'm gonna use also and feed store said they hav something else for the pool area that sterilizes is the word they used and then nothing will grow at least one year but I did buy the 10yr warranty anti weed fabric large roll and gorilla tape to tape each sheet together which I didn't tape last time and that's how one sprout came up thru tarp but wasn't any pool damage in that spot but still could hav happened quick so I'm making sure is all good.

And if I just take It all down well it's fine cause I hav the replacement liner sealed and ready for next season and I will clean the frame parts and store those. Sucks cause got all water out then rain came for bout a week so it set me back a lot. I also bought the clear gorilla tape made to patch so I hav it plus the rubberized tape and by vinyl patches w vinyl cement plus the pieces of actual liner that are patches and even big pieces of liner that go on ground with An ultra frame rectangle pool so I have more than enough and also jbwater weld and jbweld epoxy resin where u mix 2 tubes together and it will hold anything just about. Is just time and maybe some help to move the large liner and if it is cracked then I'm gonna trash it and just b done. Will b checking on test kits u mention during off season :) thanks again.

One last thing this pink looking dots on liner what should be used to clean? Bleach solution? Vinegar solution? Obviously can't just use algaecide when my pool is empty.
