Really appreciate TFP and have found advice about water chemistry invaluable. I’m happy to be our family’s “pool guy” but the learning curve is steep (moved into this house with a pool 9 months ago).

Thanks for any help you can offer for my latest problem: huge wind storm last night covered pool with leaves, pine needles and debris. I manually removed as much as I could and then started the process of having the kreepy krawly and skimmer clean up. I was emptying the skimmer basket and pump basket c. every 15 minutes for a few hours. Always primed the pump by putting a bit of water in the skimmer basket.

After a gazillion rounds of this, suddenly there is no pressure at the wall or skimmer. Pump basket seems to get half full of water. Pressure gauge goes down to zero in spurts and I can hear/see the water coming into the pump basket in spurts too. Thinking there was air in the line I tried to bleed it. Weak water comes out in spurts and never reaches full pressure (usually when I bleed there is hissing and then a blast of water; this is like turning a faucet on and off). After bleeding like this for 15 minute I stopped and when I took off the pump basket cover a ton of water came out (like it had been backed up).

Things I have tried: moving the Jandy valve to different positions to see if there was a clog/I could dislodge it. Even if I put it 100% to the skimmer (or the wall) I get no suction. I removed the pump basket and felt around the impeller to see if there was a clog. There isn’t.

Thoughts or suggestions? Many thanks!

It still sounds like a clogged impeller.

A suction cleaner pulls the debris through the pump, and it easily clogs.

You may need to open up the pump to examine the impeller.

What model pump are we discussing?

Lot's of YouTube videos on opening up a pump.

I will head to YouTube and get to work opening the pump. Thank you! It’s a Pentair vsp (photo attached).

This raises another question: after a storm like this, should I be doing something different? Vacuuming manually perhaps? Thanks again for your insights.

Vacuuming manually also sucks debris through the pump into the filter. That is why I prefer a pressure side cleaner or robot cleaner that traps debris and does not pull it through the pump and filter.

Not a clogged impeller, so I moved on to trying to find a different clog. On a hunch, because of low water flow into the pump basket and the fact that changing the diverter to 100% skimmer or 100% vacuum cleaner didn’t make a difference, I decided to see if there was a clog at the Jandy valve. Reaching first a stick and then a wire hanger in I can confirm there is a mass of compacted leaves/debris. Can I just take the top off the Jandy valve and clean out from there? The clog is so close it seems crazy to force it back through the pipes to the vacuum and skimmer.

Still curious how others deal with large amounts of debris. Clearly vacuuming this way is a recipe for problems!

That is the pump motor. It does not tell us the pump model.

Just to close out the thread in case anyone is ever in the same situation: it was a clog at the Jandy valve (before and after photos attached). Definitely the easiest thing to check before disassembling the pump or clearing lines with a hose bladder/forced air etc.
