These are my # I got
ph 8 - add 1 gal and 1 qt chlorine
ak 280 - add 1 gal- 1 qt - 3 cup muriatic acid
calcium - 900 - told me to empty some water - we just filled it
cya - 30
fc - 0

havent added anything yet - filter is running and just added the DE

Sooooooo. What should I add 1st?
etc......
and how do I get calcium down?

thanks in advance

By calcium are you talking about the calcium hardness test which we call CH? Try the test again because the number seems odd, hopefully you made some of the same mistakes I made the first time I tested for TA and CH.

It makes it easier for us if you can post your numbers like this:
FC - Free Chlorine
CC - Combined Chlorine
pH
TA - Total Alkalinity
CH - Calcium Hardness
CYA - Cyanuric Acid (stabilizer)

Have you added the chlorine and muriatic acid yet? I'm surprised to see CYA registering in tap water, that is not normal at all.

Why are you adding chlorine to address pH? The Muriatic acid you add (hard to tell how much, and what is the strength?) will lower pH as well as TA.

Better recheck your math on that CH test. Did you use a 25 ml sample, or a 10 ml sample, and what factor did you multiply by?

Also, if you haven't added anything yet, it's impossible to have 30 CYA. It doesn't exist in nature.

I wouldn't add all that acid. There's a chance your TA reading is wrong if that's a new test kit (It's not the one we recommend, by the way. Close, but missing the FAS-DPD test) due to static buildup on the tip of the R-009. So maybe 3 qts of acid for now. That should get you to about 7.5 pH. If pH goes lower than that, then you'll know the TA reading was wrong.

Definitely get some chlorine in that pool as well as some CYA.

The sequence is up to you. Bleach or acid first, CYA second, then whatever you didn't choose for #1. As long as #1 and 3 are fifteen or twenty minutes apart you're fine.

CYA - can't get dot to disappear

what do I do next? Please help
Have you added any stabilizer aka CYA to the water? You need that to protect the chlorine from the sun. Your 2 FC is probably half gone already.

Add stabilizer to a target of about 40 CYA and then add some more bleach to get to 4 FC. Read Pool School - Recommended Pool Chemicals for how to add it so I don't have to type so much.

The numbers look better already. Once you get FC and CYA set you will want to check your pH and FC daily for the first couple weeks until you get a handle on what your pool is doing. Your CH shouldn't be an issue but your TA is going to keep driving your pH up, it may do it quickly so pay attention to it. If you have a Menards near you head over there and pick up their pool shock and muriatic acid. The pool shock is 12.5% chlorine and is the cheapest thing going right now. You'll need the muriatic acid to lower your TA. Don't worry so much about getting to the recommended level but rather to a point where your pH doesn't rise unexpectedly or quickly.

No I haven't I have boughted chlorine, baking soda, and borox, - forgot about the pool stabilizer - we don't have that in our small town so I guess I have to make a road trip. Anything else I should be doing......

Just have to keep Chlorine in there. As Richard said it's probably almost gone now with No stabilizer. It burns off fast. Really fast. I would go higher myself just to be safe, and recheck it a few times a day. You.want to get the stabilizer in there ASAP. It makes it much easier to manage Chlorine consumption.

No haven't added any Cya yet - have to go purchase some tonight - brain is fried from understanding all this - lol - taking a break and mowing lawn

thanks everyone who responded - will keep you updated tomorrow
