Help! Neglected Pool – Where Do I Start?

My brother recently passed away from ALS, and I inherited his home outside of Houston. It has an older pool that was probably put in around the mid to late 80’s that is in really bad shape. He was unable to care for his home the past few years due to his illness, and the pool looks more like a pond than a pool. I can only imagine what is at the bottom of it, but I do know that it is home to many, many frogs. I personally have never owned a pool and I have no idea where to begin. I am open to filling it in or even getting it back in working order, however at this point it is so overwhelming that I don’t even know where to start. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Lots of questions to answer for truly informed advice....What are you planning on doing with the house? Do you have any pics of the current situation? Is it a gunite pool? Without knowing much....I would say if selling fill it in. If you are keeping the home and have a use for the pool...start looking at what needs to be done. Plumbing good?? Surrounding structure in good shape??

If you have any thoughts about rehab, first inexpensive thing to do is drain it and see what it looks like.

Hey BD and Welcome, although sorry it's under these circumstances.

Get us some pics of the pool in its current state and also some shots of the equipment showing all of it. The equipment may have been on its last legs when it was shut down some time ago, or the reason the pool was shut down at that time.

If the equipment is good, or you don't mind replacing it, we've brought black swamps with trees growing out of them back to life before. Between this type situation and foreclosures, yours might barely break this years top 10. :)

I am going there on Wednesday and I will take photos. Thank you for the reply, that was the first smile I've had when talking about the pool. :)

I will get some pics on Wednesday. We haven't decided what we are going to do with the house. Right now, we are just fixing up what needs to be fixed and the pool is the top of the list. I don't know what type of pool it is, or much about the equipment. I will do some research and post an update. Thank you!

So sorry about your brother 💔 but glad to have you join us. As stated above, what info you're given will depend on what your plans are. Most of us here would be like a kid in a candy store given a house with a dead pool 😂😂 kind of our weird thing to bring things to life.

Guilty as charged, so much so I missed the most important question. I went with encouragement instead, so never a regret there, but the gameplan is a huge piece of the puzzle.

@BDem18R. Understanding thats it's been too soon and there is still lots to process, do you lean more towards moving in, selling, renting, or keeping it for sentimental reasons but not visiting often ?

Probably why I let mine go in winter just so I can revive it in spring 😂😂 I'm a weirdo
