Can anyone help me identify what kind of staining this is? It will not brush off with a wire brush seems to have spread since last weekend when I shocked it multiple times.

This is a chlorine pool with wet edge signature matrix pebble plaster.

Welcome to TFP. Good to have you here :)

Get yourself some vitamin C and some chlorine tablets/pucks. Get trichlor tablets - just buy the cheapest amount.

Place the trichlor puck on the stained patch. Leave it there for one minute. Mark the spot with your big toe. Move the tablet to another spot (other big toe). Leave it there for a minute. Then back to the first spot for a inute, 2nd spot for a minute, etc. until 3-5 minutes total. Remember where the spots are. Look after a little while, and see if you can see any difference/ Difference would suggest an organic stain.

With the vitamin C, crush them up, or buy powder from a health food store. Put a couple tablespoons in an old sock and bunch it up. Use your toes to hold it against the stain for 4 or 5 minutes. Repeat a couple times. Likewise take a look at the spots later for a difference. If there is, it's probably iron.

If no difference, it could be copper. Some algaecides include copper. Some wacky pool systems actually (believe it or not) cause copper to be added to the water. Copper is bad news in pools due to staining risk among other reasons. It is also hard to test on the pool surface so that you can be sure of best treatment to get rid of it.
