HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to turn

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

It won't affect any of your levels.

There have been a lot of positive reports about it. I tried it and couldn't tell any difference. However, my pool is very clear and I was trying to get the few floaters that show up under the light at night. Cleaning a pool is completely different.

But what if Jimmy Hoffa is in the bottom or goldfish?

Eeeeks. :|

You can swim up to shock level for your CYA according to what i read on this site.

You'd swim in the lake wouldn't you? Maybe even a pond.... definitely a small creek or river.....

Well you do have a point. It's sorta like mattresses. It sounds icky to buy a used mattress but when we sleep in hotels and such, we are doing it. Not sure my point is made here, but i get your point.

The thing is...i have a ladder, so, i can get on my float, off the ladder and float around for hours then get off the float on the ladder and my feet never touch the bottom. I hardly even get wet. I suppose i could do that. :)

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

She's actually well over her shock level according to the pool calculator. At an FC of 18 she's 8PPM over then suggested shock levels of 10.

As for swimming in a lake....ewwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

LOL. Ok well, i think i'll try that DE stuff today and maybe tomorrow it will be a weee bit clearer so i can make sure there isn't a small car or something in there.

 I assumed somebody was using the pool cal to dose for shocking..... :whip:

As for the lake you don't know what your missing....nothing like wondering if there is a GIANT fish or sneaky snake just inches from you....

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Grew up swimming in lakes, ponds, rivers, and the good old Atlantic Ocean (well swimming would be pushing it because I can't do much beyond a dog paddle!!). Love it, and feeling of freedom cannot be matched in a swimming pool. It's clean enough for me!!

Even the FC/cya chart lists shock at 20CYA to be a FC level of 10

I have no clue what this means. LOL.

Yes, i promise i used the calculator!!!! Not sure why it went up so high.

As far as playing in a lake ... when i was little we would jump off a peer into the lake and that mud would go all the way up to our knees. I thought it felt great and enjoyed it.

Today...i wouldn't so much. Well, actually i wouldn't enjoy that at all.

Leebo means that even at a CYA level of 20, shock level is 10. I was kind of wondering why too but I looked in "Convert your bacqua pool to cholorine" post and saw the recommended shock level for bacqua is 15.

After you have finished converting, shock level is 10 when your CYA level is 20.

I've been following this thread and love to see the progress. Keep hanging in there. The previous owner at my house used bacqua for years, but luckily had not put any in during the year we bought the house, so my conversion went pretty fast.

It's just a matter of time, then you'll be tubin' in the sparkling pool. :goodjob:

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

...and you picked a fine day to wait for night!

14 hours 36 minutes and 13 seconds of sun today! The only day this year that will have more sunlight than today, is tomorrow!

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Well isn't that just my luck. The longest day of the year and i have to WAIT!!!! *the patience gods hate me.

I am off to find/buy DE.

Thanks again for all the positivity. It means a LOT to me.

Later gaters....

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Make sure that you get the right kind of DE. This is from Pool School:

"Gardening DE, while safer to handle, has not been heat treated and therefore is not suitable for use in pool filters."

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Yes, i saw that thank goodness prior to buying it.

I went to Home Depot (I hate that store)

Got 25 pound bag for 19.98. Not too bad.

Now, i'll go back to pool school and see if i can figure out what to do with it.

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Ok read the DE instructions in pool school.

Just have a couple of dumb questions....

Here are the steps....(with my questions attached}.

Figuring out how much DE to use

1. Start by noting the PSI reading on the filter with the pump running. (ok got this one)
2. Mix 1/4 cup of DE with water in a bucket and pour that slowly into the skimmer. Remove the skimmer sock, if any, before adding DE. (Just pour it into my skimmer with the pump running and the water still churning right?)
3. Give the system about two minutes to stabilize.(keeping the pump on still?)
4. Note the pressure on the filter and repeat the second and third steps until the pressure has gone up by one PSI. This will typically take around 1-2 cups of DE. (Ok i think i got this part).

So what keeps the DE from being shot back into the pool if i keep leaving my pump on?

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

As far as I can tell, you got everything right on the DE process. The DE gets caught at the top of the sand bed where it should not come back into the pool, if it does your sand filter is probably channeled. The DE is large enough that the sand filter "filters it out".

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Oh and picture update.

Didn't think it had cleared any but when you look at the pic there actually IS a difference. Hooray!!!!

As soon as someone gets the time to answer my questions, i'll put that DE stuff in!!!!

Yesterday morning's pic....

Just now pic......is it my imagination or can i see more of my ladder!!!!

Anddddddddddd just for giggles....THIS is where we started from.....

Re: HELP i'm in a complete mess and don't know which way to

Ok the DE is in!!!!

I put 1/4 and the pressure stayed the same at baseline 11.

Put in another 1/4 and the stayed the same....

Kept doing this until i had put in one full cup...that is when the pressure went from 11 to 13.

I'll keep an eye on it.

If the pressure goes up to 15 which is where it is when i have to backwash, do i then put in more of the DE after backwashing?
