#2 is kind of separate from the pump though... almost like a pre-filter... does that make any sense?

#2 is the "pump" which is all inclusive of the motor and the pump and the basket ... what you are thinking is the "pump" is the motor that runs the pump. 
Specifically, I guess we would call #2 the "pump basket" which is what the water is pulled in and then it goes up out of the actual water pump (impeller location) which is run by the motor on the back.
