Help? Giant Pond That's Supposed to Be a Pool? (Pics Added)

Welcome back!

Your plan sounds solid to me. Be prepared for some members to reply who may be nearby!

TFP'ers love to help. Please keep us posted!

Note to self: Do not let DH see this thread. We cannot afford another trip too far west at this time

The first pool guys I called were supposed to come by sometime this afternoon. It's after 5:30 now, and so far, they're a no-show and no phone call to let me know what's going on. Hmmm... maybe they decided they didn't want to do a green pool? They said they do them. Well, IF they show up, I'll report what they say. If not, I'll try calling another company tomorrow.

Called a different company yesterday. They came right over today. They said drain it (water table here should be no problem), clean the muck out, pressure wash, maybe re-paint (depending on how it looks when we get it cleaned up), re-fill it, then test the equipment at that time, put the proper chemicals in, then swim. They estimated the pump as maybe 10 years old (so we're thinking of possibly replacing it), said we could go 3/4 HP on a single speed or stay with 1 HP on a 2-speed. They found some little orange plastic beads in the skimmer they said came from some toy the previous owner's kids were playing with in the pool, too. They said if those have gotten into the pump, it could be ruined anyhow. We'll have to check that out. They thought sand filter and vari-flo valve should be good to go (maybe new sand). Suggested a timer. They quoted us $500 to do the clean-up (I'm assuming paint would be extra, and of course, pump replacement, timer, etc. would be extra). So, does that sound reasonable, given what you've seen in my pictures? If we do this ourselves, we'd need to rent a pump to drain it and a pressure washer to clean it. Don't know how much that would cost, or where to rent them, but can research that. What do you guys think? Opinions? Suggestions?

ETA: They also estimated, based on what they could see, and especially the light blue tiles at the top, that this pool was built in the 50s or maybe early 60s. That's consistent with the age of the house (50s). They said the pool looks good for its age.

Hi Jason... Thanks for the reply. :)

I agree we could do it ourselves, and we are definitely considering it. However, we just learned yesterday that hubby needs surgery (soon), and may lose partial use of his left arm. That would most likely put a kink in us doing the work ourselves (or at least it would end up being mostly me... I'm a little gal, but strong, so maybe I could handle it alone). Another option might be to call on friends to help... have a pool cleaning party (free beer?). Although I'm leery of turning people loose to clean my pool who don't know what they're doing (not that I do, either!).

If we do this ourselves, what size pressure washer would be good for cleaning the pool? I checked at Home Depot rentals and they want $75/day for a 2000 PSI pressure washer. Depending on what PSI we'd need, it might be worth it to just buy one and use it for other things when we are done with the pool. They also rent submersible pumps for $38/day, but I have no idea how many days it might take to drain it. Any ideas?

I looked in the Sacramento craigslist. I could find a submersible pump, but as far a pressure washers go I found what appears to be a very good one for $200, that you could resell for about the same amount after you use it:

You may find good use for it around the house as you clean up the deck, so having it for the summer could be a good thing if you can afford the cash flow hit.

Hey, thanks for the Craigslist idea! I use Craigslist all the time for all kinds of things, but hadn't thought about looking there for this sort of equipment. That pressure washer looks like a pretty good deal, and the guy who has it is right near us. I'll check it out.

Just wanted to post to say we're working on it! I'll have some pics to post soon.

In light of the fact that my hubby has had to have surgery, we hired a couple of pool guys willing to work with do-it-yourselfers like us, and we started on Monday. They drained it for us, cleaned the muck out, and pressure-washed it. I worked on the stains today with great success, and it's almost ready to refill.

The pool guys are working on getting our equipment ready to roll next. The pump motor was frozen up, but the pump itself seems fine, so our pool guy is checking on getting an energy efficient 2-speed motor we can replace it with. The filter seems OK, so that should do it, we hope.

I'm hoping maybe by this time next week, we'll be swimming. :-D WooHoo!

I'll post some pics as soon as I can get around to uploading them into my laptop (camera won't work with this computer).

And as we get into the whole process of water testing and keeping it clean and balanced, I will be back for advice.
