Help choosing a new motor/pump

Hi... We're somewhat new pool owners having bought our house with pool about three years ago. My guess is the pool is about 40 years old with no shortage of issues. We're in the Dallas area and keep the pool open year round.

Situation:
  • Pool surface of plaster, fiberglass and paint in that order with cracks/stains
  • Old tiles with cracked grout, tons of pool putty and recurrent leaks
  • Pool leaks roughly 1/2" per day until level with return outlets, at which point it appears to stop losing water
  • Bottom drain was permanently closed (PVC pipe by pump was cut and capped) before we purchased
  • A remodel including resurface, new tile/coping/deck and upgraded light is in the near term future
    • We're contemplating two potential new features: a sun shelf and/or sheer descent waterfall(s)
  • The 1/5 HP Challenger motor had gotten noisy this past season with grinding sound plus a delayed start after loud buzz/hum
    • I replaced the capacitor and revived life for a few weeks (still hummed loudly before turning over to start)
    • Now the motor doesn't start at all

The pool has two skimmers plus the bottom drain which we plan to revive or replumb during the remodel. There are five return outlets. I want to go ahead and purchase/install a new pump so that I can keep the water clean until the remodel (plus save money with the remodel by doing the motor myself).

For budget reasons I initially thought about just replacing the 1.5 HP Century motor, then I thought about a two speed motor/pump for efficiency. Lately I've been thinking about VS to handle the contemplated new features.

Now I've been reading about "feet of head" to determine pump size needs and my head is spinning. My equipment pad is level with the pool and about 20' from the deep-end water. The pool length is about 40 feet with one skimmer at the far shallow end.

I'm leaning towards staying with Pentair mostly for reputation. I don't see myself fully automating the controls so to save money have thought about the SuperFlo instead of IntelliFlo if I go with a new pump.

So I'm looking for recommendations in size and whether to stay with the single speed Challenger (just replace motor), a simple two speed or spend extra for the VS. I like the idea of not having to rewire my Intermatic freeze protection timer but will if I have to. Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!!

Hello and welcome back to TFP on this new year. Actually, you posted your question quite a while ago, and we apologize that you haven't received any input. The season is quite slow which limits the number of viewers who may relate to your situation as well. Still, you posted this just before Thanksgiving, and at the very least we wanted to follow up to see if you got the pump issue resolved. If this issue still applies, or you have any other issue to follow, feel free to reply to your own thread to keep it active for visibility with a little :bump:. Have a nice day.
