I just installed a Hayward HP21404T. My pool pump is on a timer. Do I need to turn the heat pump on and off manually or do I just leave the power on and it will cycle with the pool pump? If the pump is not running I get a "FLO" code. I know this is because the water is not flowing. I'm not sure if I have to put the heater on a timer or just leave the power on. Will I do damage if I leave the heater on? I emailed Hayward but lets just say that it seems like they have no idea what I am talking about.

My Hayward heat pump has a built in timer that I set to run when my pump is set to run. But, it is fine to leave the heater on with the set temp. It won't turn on if there is no flow and then it will cycle on and off to maintain the set temp.

I run a Heat Siphon Z575HP heat pump . It is powered "on" all the time . Only when it senses water pressure will it kick on and heat the pool , and of coarse only when its below the temp set-point .
When the pool pump shuts down , the heat pump will not run and the "flo" warning will blink .
Heat siphon recommends that this is the desired way it should be set-up, and the heat pump should always be in the ready state with the 230v power always "on" . It should be waiting for proper water flow to be "energized" as its "on button" so to speak . If its controlled by a timer it will go into a soft start, safe mode every time the power is turned back on (like with a timer) . It will then go through a countdown for a few minutes until it starts .
With it waiting for "flow" instead of "power" , it turns on instantly when the pool pump kicks on .
Been running it this way for 3 years with no issues . Just have to deal with a "flo" error flashing on the heat pump whenever the pool pump is off .
