I don't think that picture is relevant. Most pool pumps that have low speed windings are completely separate from the main winding. The low speed winding is wrapped over the main winding and consist of much finer wire (higher gauge) which is part of the reason that low speed loses about 50% in efficiency.
I would invest in a VS pump. In the long run it will pay for itself and you may even get a subsidy from your local power company. Also, because of recent DOE regulations, it is almost impossible to find single or dual speed pumps in anything other than very low HP.
