Hayward Skimmer install on Intex Ultra

I am going to be installing a new wide mouth skimmer on our Intex Ultra frame pool(new liner). Last time I installed one of these, I split the gasket into two halves, installed one half on the inside one half on the outside. I've seen videos of people putting the faceplate on as a guide, cutting the liner and then placing the gasket into the cutout without splitting the gasket.
Which is the preferred method?
