Hayward S-240 Sand Filter dome repairs or replace?

The 18 x 36 inground pool has a Hayward S-240 sand filter with a 1 1/2 HP pump. It is 23 years old. The pool volume is about 22,000 gal. We just opened the pool for the year and all ran well to begin. A significant leak started at the filter dome top during filter operation. The cap had been tightened but the O-ring gasket had extruded in a 2 inch strip. I removed the cap an found several threads of both the cap and the internal threads of the dome. were partially sheared off. After resetting the dome cap I started again and shortly the dome cap blew off. The cap was not cross threaded.
1. The dome cap and dome threads are stripped and therefore the filter is unusable now. Is there any fix or repair for the internal threads at the dome top?
2. I cannot find an S-240 replacement filter dome. What would be a logical alternate for a good long life filter unit?
3. Would a Hayward S-200 be large enough to give good filtering results.

Welcome to TFP :)

At 23 years old sounds like you should probably get a new one... We recommend the biggest filter you can get.. Old Hayward were great but Pentair now seems to be the longer lasting equipment.. The Tr100 by Pentair is a beast and my buddy got one 7 years ago and has no issues at all..

They are not cheap and right now with the Texas/south freeze and Covid everything is way more expensive even if you can find it... I just saw a cartridge filter for sale on the forum, it is a big one so would work on your setup..
