Hayward H400FDN Heater “HF” Error Code

Hello All

The last two times I have heated my spa to my set temperature (102-104). After it hits the set temp I get the HF error code when it tries to maintain the temperature. What would you suspect the problem Gas Valve or ICB?

Just trying to save a few bucks and not change out good parts.

Thanks in advance.

If you're not smelling gas when the heater is off, or getting a pre-ignition explosion when it starts, then I suspect it's a slow closing gas valve. It sounds like the control calls for the flame to shut off and a few seconds after that, the flame sensor is still 'seeing' a flame. Most likely because the valve isn't closing fast enough.

Caveat, I can't remember if you can pull the end cover off this particular heater and see the flame, but if you can. One way you could try to prove if it's the gas valve or the board is to watch the heater and as soon as it calls for the flame to shut off, see if you can see a small residual flame. If so then it's the gas valve. If the flame shuts off almost immediately, then it's probably the board.

Finally had a chance to look into the issue. Since it would heat up to my set temp (103), I figured it was the gas valve over the control board. Bought a new gas valve and installed it last Sunday and it solved my HF code issue.

Thanks
