About 6 months ago a customer called me about her Hayward FD heater not working. Diagnosed that both the ICM and Display board needed to be replaced. Very common problem. She said she didn't want to pay to replace the boards and would wait. Fast forward to last week and I get a new call that the unit leaking. Went out and sure enough, leaking pretty good. She said replace it. Today I replaced a heater that was installed less than 3 years ago.

Pool water is maintained very well so I have to make the assumption that it is once again a bad Hayward heater. Here is a picture of it. Less than three years old. Heater was manufactured in September of 2013.

Wow. That's terrible after only three years. Lots of external corrosion like that shouldn't happen unless the unit is in a pretty harsh environment. This is one of those moments I'd say using a sacrificial anode might be a good idea.

So glad I own a Pentair...oh wait, doh!!!

(Next heater is a Raypak for sure...)

The inside is like that from the leak. It was spraying all over.

Personally and just my opinion, sacrificial anode will do nothing of much good in a pool environment. Now if you install one on your boat that is in the ocean all the time, then it is a benefit. I've been in the pool industry for a long time and I see fads come and go.

Ah, ok. A spraying leak would explain that picture. I thought that was just from normal use/wear & tear.
