Good afternoon! I’m a second year pool owner and this is my first year with a Hayward DE filter (EC40). My pool was green upon opening, and the filter that came with my pool (22x52 AG, Intex cartridge filter, approx. 13k gallons) wasn’t cutting the mustard. My neighbor recently got rid of his pool and gave me the DE filter and 1HP Hayward Power Flo pump. This filter is doing an excellent job and the water was blue, slightly cloudy, one day later. However, I find that about every 1-1.5 hours, the PSI goes from about 6 to 16 and I have to regenerate it. Once I do that the pressure drops back to right around 6 or 7 and the process continues. I thoroughly cleaned the filter before installation by taking it apart, using a cleaner designed for the elements, and putting it back into operation with the required 4 lbs. of DE. Is it normal to have to regenerate it this often? Or is it simply doing its job? I am afraid to leave it on all night since I have to constantly babysit it. I will attach photos so you can see how dirty it was and what it looks like after a day and a half. If it’s working correctly and will eventually settle down then I’ll feel better about it. But like I said, I can’t leave it be for very long and I think the neighbors are starting to think I have a complex. Thank you in advance, I have learned quite a bit from this website!

Welcome to TFP.

You likely still have algae in your pool water which is clogging your DE filter.

Do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

Then follow our SLAM Process to fully eradicate the algae from your pool.

Filtering does not fix algae problems, chlorine does.

I suggest you read ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry
