Having trouble with brown spots

Do you know what gel coat product was used for the recoating?

There’s no easy way to know if the pipes are cast iron without doing a lot of digging. What is the plumbing like at the equipment pad? How old is the pool?

No, I’m not sure in the gel coat product. I just know that who I hired does fiberglass repair and gel coating. I paid them to repair any damage to the fiberglass after they sanded it down. They did do some repair. Then they put the gel coat on.

I’ll attach pics of the plumbing at the equipment pad. @JoyfulNoise

I would wait and see what the ascorbic acid treatment does for them in the fall. Unfortunately you have a very aged pool shell and so cosmetic issues like these are just going to keep popping up. Gelcoat repairs are only temporary patches … at some point the pool shell will need to be replaced. But that’s a major pool remodel/renovation job which isn’t always feasible unless you plan to live in this house for a very long time to come.

Those “tannin” stains are what we were trying to correct with the gel coat. And that’s what I’m dealing with now as well. They are little black/brown dots in the middle that look like comets as they spread out from the middle. We’ve got them all over the pool. They have seemed to respond a little to rubbing Vitamin C on them. That’s why I was planning to do an AA treatment at some point. @Texas Splash
Those things appear to be something that hit the water, started to dissolve/stain, and slide - hence the comet appearance. Not every product that falls onto our water is pure organic which would respond well to chlorine (or rubbing with a puck or cal-hypo powder). Some items have a bit of mineral deposits in them. Fertilizer is a good example. So in those cases, they may responds to Vitamin C or some sulfamic acid (i.e. pH Down powder).
