I haven't had mine blow away, but it has been blown up into a heap within the pool. But it seems to me that if you get a really strong windstorm you could see it flying away - has that ever happened to anyone?

Not likely. More likely is that an animal got into it....

If it is cut to fully float on the water surface it is highly unlikely it would blow off or wind up in a heap in the pool - at least without "help". Now, if it overlaps onto the deck or coping, the wind can easily get under it and pile it up. Chances of it flying away to a neighbors yard or down the street are very, very slim.

Mine is a little bit to big so it doesn't lie flat on the water, there is a bit that bulges up. My pool is slightly irregularly shaped - so I got a rectangular cover and cut it into two squares.

Try to cut it so it lays flat on the water. At least a one inch gap to the sidewalls so it has space to move around a little.

I will do that, but right now there are proper seams at the end. If I cut it so that it fully fits within the pool then I will be cutting right through the bubbles - is that ok.

I had one fly away once. I used to put a bubble cover on my attached spa. It’s only 7ft diameter. We had a nice wind storm blow through (we get very cellular weather bursts here) and it took off like a kite. Never found it … and no, it did not land on my roof.

Yes. My entire edge was half bubbles on the old pool and it lasted 5 years. The 'good' bubbles are what failed per usual.
