So I do have a water heater for my pool. Every time I go to my local pool store, they ask me if I have a water heater. They also ask me if it is in bypass. Then they ask me to increase the hardness of water by adding some Calcium to it.

I don't understand what does it mean by "bypass" How do I check this? I really have to know my pool and seems like this is important.
What does water hardness have to do with the heater? Seems like my last test showed the hardness to be at 175ppm.
