All,
I am getting an 18'x33' AGP installed tomorrow and I would like to hard pipe everything right off the bat. I want the pump and filter installed a little further away and bury some of the piping. Will a normal AGP pump work for this? I know I'll have to prime the pump but I don't know how well it will stay primed.

Thanks

Priming is usually the issue. Staying primed is a not an issue as long as there are no ways for air to get into the lines.

Are you mounting the pump ABOVE the level of the pool? If not, an AGP pump will work.

If you are mounting above the pool water, just make sure the pump is self priming, as most AGP pumps are not self priming.

Make sure you use Schedule 40 pipe and fittings. Don't use DWV.

The pump will be below the water level.

What valves do you recommend? Are the generic ones from Home Depot fine?

Don't use the HD valves. They will last you one, maybe two, seasons. They leak, the handles break off, and they jam up internally and there is no way to rebuild them.

If you don't need diverter valves, and with an ABG with just a single skimmer and return you likely do not, I like to use these valves.

They are priced right, heavy duty, and rebuildable. I have three on my pool - one on the return, one on the suction, and one on my DE filter waste port. I have not had an issue in 3 seasons with them.
