Man am I grateful to have found you guys! Love what you’re doing, especially the forum and pool math app! Awesome! The fire in Paradise, CA forced us to move to nearby Oroville. Beautiful property with an older fixer adobe house and pool. It’s been great but tons of DIY work and some unforeseen expenses. Never had a pool so we called the pool guy number taped to the fridge and found out we needed a whole new pump and filter system. Not surprising cause man that stuff was ugly and rusty! Pool has some serious stains too but that’ll have to wait till next season! The old man passed and his kids didn’t know anything about the pool, or much else, so we have had very little history and lots of mystery all around this place. Pool company thinks maybe it was built in the sixties but at least he had a beat up but functional kreepy krauly legend cleaner, and a DE filter. Had a very rainy spring then the pool started turning green and the frogs started feeling frisky, so rather than film nature videos we decided it was time to roll up the sleeves and learn how to save it. All the chemicals we inherited were stabilized and after algicide, shock and lots of effort we got back to blue water. Got the cheapo liquid test kit and some strips then learned about the dreaded CYA problem of over stabilization. Water test at the pool store confirmed CYA of 135 plus low TA and CH. So needless to say when we found your site we were grateful to learn what chemicals not to use and to stay away from the pool store overpriced junk! Good thing you’re site didn’t crash, cause we read everything five times and wore out the app! Took a week to drain two feet down but we got to 92 CYA! We were grateful to be able to have a killer Fourth of July pool party thanks to TFP! Now it’s the middle of summer, we’ve got balanced water finally but CYA is still 80. Got a new Pentair intelliflo system, a real test kit, the waters beautiful and we’re doing pretty good for rookies! Enjoying our first summer with a real pool! Thanks for everything you have built here and everybody involved and participating! Massive appreciation!! Couldn’t have done it without you!2B7816FB-A86B-4458-803E-6B58D6FC960E.jpeg

Thanks, yeah salt sounds like the way to go, the pool contractor said they almost never have algae issues! For now lots of liquid sodium hypochlorite and muriatic is keeping it crystal clear. I will probably drain more next month to get the CYA down so not so much bleach will be needed. Today’s test:
FC 3.6
pH 7.6
TA 120 (94 CYAf)
CH 250
CYA 80
