Does anyone know what this grey sand like stuff could be that’s on the bottom of my pool and getting into the filter and forcing me to to clean it very often? I just moved into a rental house that has a pool. It’s a Hayward c900 filter. When I first got here I scooped it out of the bottom of the filter housing by the handful. It’s a gunite pool so I don’t know if it’s that or if it’s means the filter cartridge is old. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TFP.

Take a pile of the sand stuff and drip some muriatic acid on it and see if it bubbles. If it does it is calcium. If not, it is inert sand or dirt.

You have a typical small Florida filter that does not go long between cleanings. A larger filter does not need to be cleaned so often.
