Hi All:
Have a INTEX 5000gal AGP with sand filter. Been following the TFP method and it has been working great.
We will be away from the pool for 2 weeks. I plan to SLAM the pool, and cover it before leaving. With all other chemistry being ok, I was thinking of having my neighbor dump in 1/2 gal of 12% bleach every 4-5 days. So that would mean 1.5gal over 15 days. Current pH is 7.5, and CYA is 60.

Not gonna use pucks. Had a CYA disaster last year… so I’m wondering if my idea above would work, or if I’m headed for trouble.

Suggestions/advice GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you.
Doug

1/2 gallon of 12% liquid chlorine in your 5,000 gallon pool will add 12 ppm of FC.

That is a lot to add every 4-5 days if you have the pool covered.

Have you put your cover on for a day or two or three and see what your FC loss is with the cover on?

What is your daily FC loss without the cover?

Hi Doug, I've been taking care of my neighbor's pool while he has been out of the country for the past 7 weeks. To give you some idea of what I've dealt with.........He has a 30K, inground, vinyl pool with a SWG. He has a solid winter cover that he placed on the pool prior to leaving. I run the pump and SWG about 2-3 hours every day and test about every 5 days. I will occasionally remove the cover in a corner of the deep and and shallow end to let the pool "breathe". Other than the times the corners are opened, the pool has been fully covered and does not get any sun through the cover. His CYA is 70 and his FC has fluctuated from a low of 6.5 to a high of 10 while he has been gone. His SWG stopped working about a month ago so I purchased a few gallons of LC until he returned. I just checked my POOL MATH for his pool and I've only added about 1 gallon of 10%LC to maintain his levels over the past two weeks. If you have a very solid cover you may be surprised how little FC your pool loses in the two week period. In my instance, that 1 gallon of LC represents a 3ppm of FC usage in a two week period. Perhaps my experience can be of some use to you.

Thanks for the advice! I was going to leave our blue floating solar cover on, so it’s not a winterizing cover per se. leaving the cover on for a few daysis a good idea but it’s so stinking hot that our water temps will go above 85F in no time. Guess ya can’t have your cake and eat it too! :)

Wow. Ok, yea my amounts do seem high. As in the previous post I guess I’ll have to see how much FC the pool loses per day with the cover on and go from there.

Thank you!
