Getting rid of small flying bugs

I just put in a small temporary pool and there's a decent amount of small flying bugs by it. I'm in Raleigh, NC so this time of years there's a lot of bugs out and I'm not certain the pool is attracting them. I'm not sure the exact bug, sort of like a gnat/very tiny mosquito, fly/hover in swarms, and bite a bit but are so small you can barely feel it and it doesn't welt.

Any recommendations for getting rid of them? I'd rather not use chemicals as I have young kids. Was thinking about citronella or a tiki torch.

Hmm, I am close by you and it sounds like gnats. There are citronella plants you can try instead of the candles. I am not having those bugs. Is there anything else near you that would be causing the bugs to swarm? Neighbors' trash?
