Gas Supply Line Question

A month back I noticed I had water leaking from the supply side of my Sta-Rite 400btu heater. It was the connection loose, or so I thought. I tried tightening the fitting only to strip and make it worse. In my efforts to repair the connections I realized they were actually not going on straight but at an angle. Since I’m sure that wasn’t meant to be, I needed to move the heater. Really only thing holding it down when water isn’t present is basically the gas supply line. Curious just messed up this was I disconnected the gas supply line at the union. I then moved the heater to get the connections line up perfectly and no more leak. Now I’m stuck with a supply line that is 4” too long. Over the past year I’ve had the heater replaced along with some additions to the pool like a water slide. Who knows how long it’s been like this and which one caused it. Knowing how to do black pipe I just don’t like several trips to Home Depot getting the pipe cut and threaded correctly. If we can use a flexible gas supply line for a stove/oven, why can’t we do the same for a pool heater?
