Freeze Protection - Pump was not on this morning even though temperature was 26

Hi everyone,

We have a variable speed Pentair pump for both a pool and spa. I have skimmed (no pun intended) all the forums looking for answers and I haven't found exactly what I am looking for, so thank you for reading and any help you can provide!

The Freeze mode is set for all three of Pool, Spa and Spillway. When I woke up this morning with an outside temp of 26, the pump was off. The remote said the Freeze mode was on but the pump was off. The light on the Spillway was on on both the panel and remote. I went outside and turned the pump on manually. It was 7:40. Regular start time for the pump is 8:00. The spa had drained down to the light overnight, it does this only on Freeze mode.

We have not winterized the pool because we want to be able to use the spa in the winter. However, waking up to a pump that is not on with an outside temp of 26 (lower with wind chill) scares the beejevers out of me.

These are my questions:

1. Why was the pump off? Doesn't it turn on automatically regardless of the timer on it in freezing conditions? I have now set the first speed to run for 24 hours. It was set up to run 8-5. Will this solve the issue or should it have turned on by itself in freezing?
2. When freeze mode is on for all three, pool, spa and spillway, do they all run every 15 minutes in a loop? The spillway does not run on freeze mode even though the light is on on both the panel and remote.
3. The spillway light does not turn off at all in freeze mode even when the pool and spa are running.
4. If spillway WAS running, it would solve the issue with the draining spa when on freeze mode. Is it one or the other, i.e., spillway or spa even though both are selected to run on freeze mode?
5. What is the ideal speed to run the pool and spa on freeze mode? If I select it fro Freeze, will it over ride the speeds when the pump is running under non freeze conditions?

Thank you so very much for your help.

Cristina

Freeze mode will alternate the configured valves every 15 minutes so I would say the answer to question #4 is "one or the other"? I have a pool with a waterfall and it switches the valves every 15 minutes.

Page 39 in the manual describes it in better detail than I did ;)

Whoops, I forgot to mention my pump is set to 1000 for freeze mode

Same with mine. On mine it will alternate between pool and spa every 15 minutes until the temperature gets warm enough to disengage freeze mode.

You may want to double check the temperature setting for freeze mode on your controller. It is configurable, if I remember correctly. Maybe someone said it to something crazy low?
