For those who have converted - I want to know if there is any chlorine odor or dry feeling on the skin after swimming

I agree totally. I should have started keeping it under control when it was still only a small mound. I realize the restrictions associated with it. At this point, to dig it all out would entail some work but I think it will need to be done. I always wear a mask when working with it BUT wind up driving over it with the mower and, as you correctly indicate, there are times when it's bone dry and then kicks up dust .

I don't like the stuff to be quite honest. I like it for its filtering ability, but otherwise would never miss it if I never had to open another bag of it. This is sort of where I'm stuck on the sand option - what do you do with all of it once it needs to be changed? From what I'm told, the pool store doesn't take it along. I love swimming, but, quite honestly, some of this other stuff - worrying about chemicals, maintaining readings, on and on , is starting to get old after 31 years.

So...Melbourne, eh? I'd LOVE to go to Australia - has always been high on my list. Who knows when your continent will start allowing US visitors again. Same for other countries.

Sounds like a good time to ditch the old and get a new.... I grew up with a pool that had DE filters, so it was no mystery to me when we bought our current house and the pool had a DE filter. But I must say a cartridge filter is easier to work with between cleanings. And I really don't see any less filtration.. Honestly we are splitting hairs quibbling about an difference of 7 microns.

Glad to hear that you are aware of the DE risks, sure you'll deal with it appropriately.

Certainly worth visiting Australia, lots to see. Traveling is always great, had a few trips to the US, loved all the parks and how welcoming people were.

At the moment Melbourne is not such a great place to come to, we're the bad guys in the Covid crisis. After having dealt with the first wave, more and more clusters are emerging. They are locking down suburbs, and even put some full lockdowns on some appartment blocks. Neighbouring states just closed their borders to Victoria.

But I don't want to side track here. Looks like you're doing very thorough research before committing to anything. That's the way.

Well, not sure it's moreso "obsessing" as opposed to the "thorough research" part, but I don't give up easily. Sorry to hear about new virus clusters. I have ancestry from Warrnambool. Best of luck to you down there. Maybe some day....

Ok, after all the discussions in your various threads I'm sure you're aware of that lack of dry skin and odors question and this thread has morphed into a whole 'nuther realm so I'm going to close it.
