First year opening a pool

This is our first pool and first time opening one up. Water is clear. Just got my tf-100 so no more trips to the pool supplier. My current levels are ok but my TA is high. Making an aerator this weekend to aerate the water and use acid to drop the TA. Question is I’d like to add borax to my pool too. As a matter of fact I’ve already added 6lbs or so to get the ph up it was low and panicked, like 6.2 low and had some on hand. Just added a little then tested ph and over and over again. So my question is do I fight my TA first or Atleast to get it down to a certain level then work on the borax, or work on the borax first. Working on everything at once doesn’t seem like a fun experience. And yes I’ve read the pool school stuff. Also any recommendations for borax tester? And last question, should I work on bumping my cya up now or wait till it gets warmer, don’t want it to get too high and wasn’t sure if higher temps and humidity affected cya that much. And yes I’ve read and read the pool school stuff if this info is in there I missed it B41ECB93-009C-4215-97B1-A43E2D2089C8.png

Welcome! :)

The TA is quite high but unless your CSI is really positive, you can probably take it down over time. Watch the pH as it will climb quickly - then when it hits 8.0, add enough muriatic acid to take it down to 7.0. Add more acid when it climbs back up to 8.0 again. Over time it will drop unless you have really high fill water TA and a lot of evaporation.

Not sure how you got 35 for CYA but if you were anywhere between 30 and 40 just round up and call it 40. :)

Here’s some info on borates. I haven’t bothered with them yet myself. But I’m considering it maybe later this year, maybe next year.
