First time pool owner (came with the house) - working to lower CYA of 140

Opened the pool Monday of this week, and was surprised to find that the water was clear, but the level was low. Topped off pool, ran filter for 12 hours to circulate everything, and tested water. CYA tested 140 via dilution test.

Following excellent instruction from woodyp, I began drain and fill yesterday

  • 5/11/18 - 12:00am - 1st pool drain completed. Shallow end at 18"
  • 5/11/18 - 12:05am - 1st pool refill begins. 2 hoses, wide open, out of pool to create splash / aerate. Pump set to filter during fill.
  • 5/11/18 - 9:30am - 1st pool refill completed.
  • 5/11/18 - 10:10am - CYA test now reads 80. An improvement from 140.

Should I immediately begin another drain/refill cycle?
Should I let the pool circulate a while and then test again?
If I should wait, how long before the next test?
If I'm waiting, is there anything I should/can do? :confused:

Soooooo many questions as a pool n00b ;)

Thanks everyone - hope your weather is as beautiful as it is here!!

After 2 massive drain & refill sessions, here are the results after filling the last time:

FC = 2.2
CC = 0.2
pH = 7.0
TA = 70
CH = 110
CYA = 35
temp = 74

Can someone check my next steps?
  1. Brush and vac entire pool
  2. Get pH up to 7.5 before SLAM (soda ash)
  3. Bring FC up to 14
  4. continue normal SLAM process

Thanks everyone!!

You will want pH around 7.2 not 7.5 for SLAM. The lower pH will allow the Chlorine to be more efficient, and unless someone objects, I would leave the pH right where it is and go for it. May want to wait for an objection from a Mod.
