First time pool owner (came with the home we just bought). Was opened by professionals who seemed to suggest filter works fine. But the algae didn’t go away. So I went through Leslie’s treatment of soda ash , green to clean and then 24 pounds of PPP etc. Pool had started to clear up (my neighbor and I have been putting more soda ash/ liquid chlorine since). My Ph was at 7.2, cya was in range and choline was a little low. The pool was still muddy. It rained and 1 day later the algae was back again. So I shocked it with 12 gallons of 12.5% liquid. Algae seemed to have reduced but it’s not close to zero. When I went again to Leslie and they are asking to do the entire protocol again I am almost $1k in at this point). The manager said maybe my filter was not perfect and asked me to check if the water flow back was with force - and it was not forceful. So I thought I would ask if the filter is not perfect does it make sense to keep shocking? Any other tips on how I can check if the filter is working perfect? The pump def seems to be working. Thanks and sorry for the long first post!!

First thing you need to do is to stop going to Leslies ;)

Second thing is to get yourself a decent test kit

Third thing is to put enough Liquid Chlorine in your pool to equal 5PPM per day - until the test kit arrives. Without knowing how big your pool is, I can't suggest an amount. This is just to try and stop things getting any worse in the short term.

Fourth thing is to run a complete set of tests and posts the results here, and the brainiacs will figure out what you need and how to get back on track.

Adding your pool details and equipment to your signature (like below) will help avoid a lot of question/answer back and forth too :)

Seriously recommend reading all the articles under Pool Care Basics Archives - but at a minimum :

In the meantime, no more potions, powders, cure-alls, wonder-products etc - you need accurate testing before you can determine the correct course of action!!

If you can't tell already, we don't trust the pool store. Ha.
