Hey everyone!

First post on here, but already I need to say thanks to the community for the wonderful info available here. Hopefully I picked the right subForum to post in!

I grew up with an in-ground (two different pools), so not completely unaware of pool maintenance and such. This is the first pool I am solely responsible for. I wanted to get it done as inexpensively as possible, while being safe and reliable. The idea is to get the fam hooked on having a pool, then installing an in-ground.

First, I chose a location. Because I was going to be setting it up myself, I wanted as little labor as possible so I chose a spot that had adequate sunlight and was as flat as I can find. There are some gradual slopes on our small property so balancing view by neighbors/front of the house, grade, and sunlight was key. Fairly happy with the location but do wish I could have had more sun in the later afternoon. That will certainly influence the in-ground location.

I marked a 23' diameter circle out and started cutting sod. By hand. In July in the Northeast. 90*. Not a great time. Luckily, the local guy I had called about sand came by and took pity on me, offered to use his skid steer to level a spot real quick. Took him about 20 mins. Then he dumped and roughly leveled the sand for me. I then began leveling the pavers that the legs would sit on.

Once leveled, I installed the pool itself. It is a 22ft x 52in round Coleman from Walmart. I got a great deal on it, and despite all the negativity I have seen about these types of pools, the quality surprised me. It took a while to get it right, and I tried to take my time and get it right. Made a small patio (still needs leveling) to help with the ladder. If I will say anything negative about the pool, the ladder IS pretty bad, as everyone knows. I plan to replace it. Here's the pool filling the first time.

I knew I wanted to add a skimmer, so I bought the Hayward 5in square skimmer and installed it. Decided to hard plumb the entire thing while I was at it, so it would facilitate the installation of a big sand filter next year. That was a bit of a process. Let me know if anyone has any questions on anything.

Ran into some technical difficulties there, apologies! I thought there was a post limit to the amount of space for pictures, but I am unable to upload my pics. I get an error.

But the pics are all pretty much the same size. The two in the first post are actually the biggest...

Anyway I do have some pics of the plumbing and will post them soon as I can figure this out lol. Thanks for the welcome and compliment. Hope I can help others that might have questions, as I know I came here for some along the way and I will have more in the future. These types of projects never really end. I know I need to put in a retaining wall on the side where the sand is built up. I am also going to add some round stone around the perimeter. And install a deck.

Thanks all - I got it sorted out.

#40Fam they are definitely one and the same. Janky is definitely a perfect term.

OK here's the plumbing.

And here it is, please excuse the lack of vacuuming. Hard enough convincing the wife we needed all those fittings  we just need purchase the brush, hose, and vacuum head. And then use them. Lol.

Thanks!! Yes, totally agree. That is next up in the plan, a retaining wall on that side. More sand to backfill. Will probably re-level a pylon or two on that side as well, then round pebble stone around the whole thing. It already needs a weeding too! We've gotten lots of rain lately.

One thing I am not 100% happy with in regards to the plumbing is that the unions are on top of the valves for the two inlets. This came about because I initially was trying to save and only use one valve for those two inlets, but in the end just went and got another cause I wanted to control each and decided the one extra valve was worth the cost. It obviously works fine, and I can disconnect the entire bottom when winterizing, but will need to purchase plugs for the inlets there rather than the valve filling that role. Probably better for the valve to be stored inside anyway. Also that 22.5* elbow is DWV which is why I went a little wild with the glue on that one messy join. Will probably do the other side as well just for good measure. Regardless, everything seems to be holding up fine, one super slow drip on the return outlet, just needs a lil more teflon tape.

Thanks much! I hope it does help and like I mentioned, let me know if any of y'all have questions. It was fun and rewarding, and I know we will enjoy it for all it's worth. It is funny though, these things always turn into neverending projects. Next is the retaining wall. Then the deck. Then running power. Then new filter. Etc...

P.S. I know the pool is slightly too full. Will splash some out this evening with the boys ;-)
