Hi.
Pool is 3 years old, Pebbletec, SWG, in SW Florida. I've been doing a SLAM because we had an issue with black spot algae. Water has always been totally clear even with the algae present, and I haven't ever seen a hint of combined chlorine. I use the Taylor test kit. Pool has always been maintained using Pool Math by myself, but I've obviously gone wrong somewhere. It's never once been out of range on anything. My levels are FC 6-7, pH between 7.4 - 7.8, Alk 60-80, CYA 30-50, Calc 360. CSI has always been decent.
I think I'm at the end now but have some random questions so figured I'd just put them all down in one general post.
1. Firstly, just wondered the most likely reason why we got it. The pool did go through Hurricane Ian so lost filtration for 10 days (maintained levels best I could), but that was Oct 2022 and the algae only first appeared in early 2024 so don't think it's that. The other thought is I have skimped a little on weekly brushing, and also the pump hours. I usually ran 10-12 hours daily at 2500rpm. Maybe that wasn't enough. Now switched it to 24hrs and slightly lower speed. The only other thought is I never shock the pool. It never sees heavy use and even heavy rains have never affected the FC level, so have never seen the need... have I been wrong not to?
2. I've been SLAMing for 2.5 weeks now. Overnight loss started at 6ppm and is now less than 1. The cartridge filter was cleaned every 2-3 days and was mildly green at the start but got better throughout. For the last week I've been more concerned with daytime loss as I was averaging around 15ppm loss in daylight hours. It's consumed 1.5 gal of chlorine per day for 2 weeks. So this is my next question... My CYA has always been very stable - like wouldn't need anything adding for months sometimes. I started the SLAM at 30ppm CYA and it only occurred to me to check the level when the daytime chlorine loss was not getting any better. It was zero. Does a SLAM zap all your CYA? I added 4lbs to take me back to 40ppm and the daytime loss immediately settled right at around 4ppm (so around 5ppm per 24 hrs). I'm happy at that I think.
Thanks....
