Can someone tell me the difference between and DE filter ( I have currently). I love the filtration and its ability to remove tiny particles, but the back washing and breaking down to clean is a bit of a pain.

I see these Swim clear filters by Hayward that tout DE filtration with no need to backwash.

Is this true? How to they work compared to a DE filter?

J,
There are 3 types Sand, DE and Cartridge. All work fine if properly sized and maintained. I prefer cartridge. Easy to maintain with a 20 min clean every 3 months or less so long as it's properly sized. DE is arguably capable of removing finer particles but I don't think that is really needed in pool service. My brother swears by his DE filter. Both our pools look great and mine always looked that way. His didn't but it had more to do with the fact I used TFP than the filter choices. You'll find many people on here that have success with all 3 types. So like many things pool a lot of this comes down to personal preference.

On my next pool (building permit application submitted this past weekend) we're sticking to Cartridge for what it's worth.

Just some personal experience here. I finally have the set up below in my signature block installed and running now for a few weeks. This is our third season owning this pool and I really wish I would have known about cartridge filters two years ago. I now have 10x the filtration area of my old Pentain FNS+ DE filter and the flow is absolutely incredible. No more "air bubble" in the pump basket when run at low speeds and the pump was turning over so much water that I had to decrease the run speeds significantly as the water features and returns jets were just bubbling like crazy. We live in a windy high plateau and all sorts of flotsam gets blown into the pool, however now it's turning over so fast that even the kiddos noticed the difference. Anyway, I'm really happy not to be dealing with DE powder anymore or having to dump it out into the yard.
